Today...

No boss today - maybe I can leave early? Keep your fingers crossed for me that I'm able to.

So - I took Alex to the Dr. yesterday, it was time for an annual checkup and I also wanted to speak to the doc about his behaviour - it's just so extreme. So after talking to the doctor, he confirmed that he did suspect that it was ADHD. So what did he do? Whips out that trusty prescription pad and starts talking medication. I was like - WHAT? Ummm.... I really don't want to medicate my 8 year old child. I'm sure that in some cases it is warranted, but I don't believe that we are there yet. I would like to talk about perhaps some behavioural and/or dietary changes that we could make that may help him before we talk about meds. So, he says... (in a nice condescending tone...) "well medication is really the only thing that has been proven to work." What? Are you kidding me? I was quite annoyed. I mean, from talking to me for 15-20 minutes you "diagnose" my child and put him on pills? Is this crazy or what? So I ask him if he had anything that I could read about ADHD, or should I take Alex to a behavioural psychologist or something? He shrugs his shoulders and tells me that I can get lots of research done on the internet. NICE. I stopped at good ole Barne's and Nobles on the way home (I LOVE that place!)
I found a couple of books and got these. So, now I'm just trying to read up on it and figure out what to do next?! I wrote a letter to Alex's teacher as well, and hope to meet with her and the guidance counselor at school to discuss it further. We shall see.... I guess. The funny thing about it is, as I'm reading the books and looking over the symptoms...I'm going, yep, yep, yep - he has that too - oh yeah, definitely that one! Then I look back over the list and Hubby fits into most of the symptoms as well - so much! Too funny - so now we know where Alex gets it from... oh well. That's all that I know this morning! I'll write more later! Hope all is going well for everyone!
